Abstract
How creative is language learning and teaching and what do we mean by creativity? In this presentation conceptions of creativity in language learning are considered, including a report on an empirical project with school-age language students in the UK. For many years younger learners in the UK have been exposed to mainly transactional language in which the figurative has been stripped away. We were interested in seeing how learners reacted to different types of text, including poetry, and the outcomes when the learners were exposed to different teaching approaches, some of which aimed explicitly to generate creativity. Preliminary findings suggest that the rate of vocabulary development can be improved through creative approaches, while attitudes towards language teaching, whether within a traditional or creative condition, remain mixed.
